The roll shops of flat strip steel and aluminium mills must provide the mills with rolls that are unblemished and completely free of defects such as grinder chatter, feed marks and any other regular marks. The UNIVIB vibration monitor is a tool for the use of the machine operator to assist him to prevent chatter marks from being ground into the surface of rolls as a result of grinder chatter and other abnormal vibrations occurring during grinding by providing an early warning of the build-up of the self-excited chatter vibration, or other abnormal vibrations during the grinding process.

Early warning is provided by illuminated LED's, and
a beacon, which alert the operator to intervene by reducing the infeed
or changing the speeds, before the chatter vibration becomes serious enough
to mark the roll. In the case of CNC machines, such intervention can be
programmed to occur automatically upon receipt of a signal from the monitor.
